Gadsden purchase
THE PURPLE SECTION OF THE MAP SHOWS THE REGION OF THE GADSDEN PURCHASE
THE WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, AND HOW:
A few years after the Mexican Cession, the United States acquired more land from Mexico. In 1853, James Gadsden arranged the purchase of a strip of land just south of the Mexican Cession for 10 million dollars. This land was relatively flat so railroad builders wanted it for the railroad route. Most Americans were pleased with the new outlines of their country. Not everyone rejoiced in this expansion. Many people had believed that the U.S. was too good to bully or invade its weaker neighbors, well the was before the Mexican-American war. Now they realize that that behavior is the dark side of manifest destiny.
